Enjoy the Privilege of Riding the School Bus

State law requires a school district to provide transportation to all elementary and middle school-aged children who live more than two miles from their home school, and all high school students who live more than three miles from school. Iowa State University contracts with the Ames Community School District to provide transportation, at no charge, to all students living in the University Student Apartment Complex.

Riding the School BusDiscretionary Bus Service

The Ames Community School District makes discretionary transportation available to students who live nearer to school than two miles under the following guidelines:

  1. Your child must live or have child care at least one-half mile from school.
  2. Your child must live or have child care on or near an existing route and must be able to get to an established bus stop.
  3. There must be an available seat on the bus.
  4. The parent or guardian must pay a fee for discretionary service

Seats for discretionary bus service are made available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Request should be made using the discretionary busing online form within the Ames Community School District web site. To remain current, a request must be completed in each school year transportation is desired. Discretionary transportation service is available for many Ames area daycare centers. Check with your daycare provider or Central Iowa Transit, Inc. for more information.
